The ice of overcapacity is gradually melting, and the LED industry may usher in a new round of explosion.

The LED industry, which has significant technical advantages such as energy conservation, environmental protection, and long service life, is a well-deserved "sunrise industry." It should have a broad space for development, but in the past two years it has been labeled the "second photovoltaic industry." The development of the LED industry has also experienced a bumpy fate from a promising future in early 2009 to a difficult situation in 2012. The reason is that in addition to the price decline caused by overheated upstream investment in LED and the fierce competition among downstream companies for homogeneous products, the vast majority of LED companies in my country lack core technology and are highly dependent on imports for core products. This is the biggest reason for the development difficulties of the LED industry.

In 2013, the LED industry, which has experienced ups and downs, is gradually improving. With the gradual establishment of national standards and the increasing technological research and development results of leading companies, the LED industry's overcapacity dilemma is gradually melting, and the LED industry may usher in a new round of explosion.

The government has abolished industrial support, and the LED industry will return to market regulation

In March this year, the Shenzhen Municipal Government abolished the "Notice on Issuing the Shenzhen LED Industry Development Plan (2009-2015)" in the form of a "Government Gazette" that had been in effect for more than 4 years, which attracted widespread media attention. Jumping back to 2009, the Shenzhen Municipal Government issued a plan to build Shenzhen into "an important LED industry R&D and production base in the country and even the world." It was expected that the scale of Shenzhen's LED industry would reach more than 130 billion yuan by 2015. At that time, the plan was regarded as a blueprint for many cities across the country to formulate relevant plans. Faced with a completely different situation four years later, industry insiders said that although the government documents did not disclose specific reasons and details, it is undoubtedly directly related to the current development trend of the LED industry, especially overcapacity and overheated investment.

Li Jun, chairman of Leyard Optoelectronics Co., Ltd., said that the Shenzhen Municipal Government’s withdrawal policy indicates that the government will no longer provide financial subsidies to LED manufacturing companies and the development of the industry. This may be a signal that the future development of the LED industry may rely on the market. In the long run, it will be beneficial to the development of the LED industry, especially companies focusing on high-end LED application products.

LED display technology ushered in a breakthrough

LED display products first appeared in the late 1980s and quickly became widely used in the field of large-screen displays due to their long service life, strong environmental adaptability, and high price-performance ratio. In recent years, with the significant improvement of LED display technology and the substantial decrease in unit costs, the LED display application industry has shown an explosive development trend. According to statistics, the market size of my country's LED display application industry reached 25.3 billion yuan in 2012, an increase of 15% from 22 billion yuan in 2011.

The continuous expansion of the market scale is due to the continuous improvement and improvement of the LED display application industry in terms of large-screen clarity, complete machine reliability and process. Especially in terms of small-pitch display technology, domestic enterprises have made great progress in recent years. Take Leyard Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. as an example. In recent years, Leyard has been committed to the research and development of small-pitch LED display products and has made breakthroughs. The point pitch of its small-pitch LED display products has achieved a triple jump in just a few years, further shrinking from 3.0mm point pitch to 2.5mm, 1.9mm and 1.6mm point pitch, and currently the world's first minimum 1.2mm micro-pitch LED TV panel. This creates technical conditions for the large-scale commercial application of high-resolution and large-size LED displays. In the future, LED panel TV products are also expected to gradually replace current LCD TVs in the large-screen high-end TV market and become the third generation of mainstream display technology in the history of TVs.

Currently, LED small-pitch TV products can not only meet the demand for high-end large-screen TVs in public service venues such as large conference centers, cinemas, and office buildings, but also have huge demand potential in professional applications in specific industries such as military, public security, energy, transportation, and radio and television. It is expected that product sales will experience explosive growth in the future.

Li Jun revealed that through the current strong cooperation with Taiwan Everlight, American Ti, and Xiaomi technology industry chain companies, Leyard LED TV has finally made breakthroughs in the small size of LED lights, high brightness and stability of picture quality, powerful chip computing speed and content entertainment experience, convenient operation methods, etc., and has the foundation for industrial application.

From the current product technology and application market, the advantages of LED TV are more prominent in the large-screen display market, especially in the display screens in public places such as airports, stations and banks, application displays in transportation, energy, broadcasting and other industries, and high-end home theaters. Small-pitch LED TVs are expected to replace LCD and PDP plasma products and become the mainstream display technology. With the further development of LED display technology, small-pitch LED TVs will gradually enter the large-size (100-inch or above) TV market in the future.
